Fee Notes

How Shopify fees apply

Shopify's pricing page lists the Basic plan online card rate as 2.9% plus $0.30 USD. This calculator applies that processing fee to total revenue, which on this page means sale price plus buyer-paid shipping.

Shopify's help docs say that when you use Shopify Payments, orders processed through Shopify Payments are not charged third-party transaction fees. That is why the optional 2.0% surcharge should stay off for Shopify Payments orders and only be enabled when you are modeling a third-party gateway scenario.

Shopify's third-party transaction fee page says the billing formula is based on order value including shipping and tax, after discounts. The shared calculator on this site does not yet have separate tax or discount inputs, so this page should be treated as a practical baseline rather than an exact replica of Shopify billing in every edge case.

How To Use

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the product sale price and any buyer-paid shipping to model the order revenue that the Basic-plan fee rates apply to on this page.
  2. Add your item cost and seller-paid shipping cost to convert the payout estimate into net profit and margin.
  3. Leave the third-party gateway surcharge toggle off for Shopify Payments. Turn it on only when the order is processed by an external provider and you want a baseline estimate of Shopify's extra 2.0% Basic-plan transaction fee.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I turn on the 2% third-party gateway surcharge for Shopify Payments?

No. Shopify's help center says orders processed through Shopify Payments are not charged third-party transaction fees. Leave the 2% surcharge off for Shopify Payments orders and use it only for third-party gateway scenarios.

What fee does this Shopify calculator use for the Basic plan?

The baseline processing fee is Shopify's published Basic-plan online card rate: 2.9% plus $0.30 USD per order. This page applies that rate to the order revenue entered into the calculator.

Does this Shopify profit calculator exactly match Shopify's billing formula?

Not in every case. Shopify says third-party transaction fees are calculated from order value including shipping and tax, after discounts. This shared calculator models sale price plus buyer-paid shipping and does not have separate tax or discount inputs yet, so use it as a practical baseline estimate.
